How spaced repetition actually works, and why cramming fails
Everyone has crammed. The night before a test you sit down with the whole topic, push through it in one heroic sitting, and walk in the next morning with everything feeling sharp and close to the surface. Sometimes it even works, for that test. Ask the same questions three weeks later and most of it is gone, and the weeks you spent building it are gone with it.
This is not a willpower problem or a memory problem. It is how memory works for everybody, and there is over a century of research describing it precisely. Once you know the shape of the problem, the fix is almost embarrassingly simple. It just is not the fix most students use.
The forgetting curve
In the 1880s Hermann Ebbinghaus taught himself lists of nonsense syllables and tested himself at intervals, and the curve he drew has been replicated ever since. Memory for new material drops fast, steeply in the first day or two, then more slowly. Learn something once and do nothing with it, and within a week you keep only a fraction of it.
Cramming lives entirely inside the steep part of that curve. Everything you learn the night before an exam is at its freshest the next morning, which is exactly why cramming feels so effective. The problem is what the curve does next. The material was learned once, shallowly, in one sitting, so it decays on the fast schedule. Cram for a class test on Friday and you may do fine on Friday. The final exam is not on Friday, and the mock before it is not either.
Cramming buys you tomorrow morning. Spacing buys you exam day.
What spacing changes
Here is the part worth memorising. Ebbinghaus also found that each time you relearn material after partially forgetting it, the curve flattens. The second time you retrieve something it decays more slowly than the first, and the third time more slowly again. The forgetting itself is doing work for you. Struggling to recall something a few days after you learned it, and just managing to, is one of the strongest learning events available. Researchers call this a desirable difficulty.
That is the whole trick behind spaced repetition. Not more hours, the same hours placed differently. Three separate one-hour sessions on a topic, spread across two weeks, reliably beat one three-hour block, and the gap gets bigger the further away the exam is. The effect shows up in study after study, across ages and subjects, and it is one of the least controversial findings in learning science.
It also explains why cramming feels better than it performs. A cram session ends with everything fluent and easy to recall, because you only just read it. A spaced session ends with you having struggled to drag material back from last week, which feels worse and does more. Judging your study by how smooth it felt is how the least effective method keeps its reputation.
How to space your study without an app
You do not need software or a perfect algorithm to get most of the benefit. You need return visits, roughly placed, combined with retrieval rather than rereading.
- After you first learn a topic, come back to it the next day, then a few days later, then the week after, then monthly. The exact gaps matter far less than the fact that there are gaps.
- Make every return trip a retrieval trip. Close the notes and produce the material from memory, then check. A reread does not reset the forgetting curve the way a successful recall does.
- Rotate subjects inside a week rather than binging one. A GCSE student carrying ten subjects and an IB student carrying six are both better served by short returns to many topics than a full day on one.
- Let the gaps grow. Material you recalled easily last time can wait longer. Material you fumbled comes back sooner. Your own sense of shaky versus solid is a good enough scheduler.
- Start earlier than feels necessary. Spacing needs calendar room to work, and whether your exams land in May or in November, the version of you sitting them will be glad the returns started months out.
